In the event of an earthquake, USGS Menlo Park will provide estimates of coseismic offsets at Global Positioning System (GPS) sites. Immediately after an event the displacements will be predicted from what is known about the rupture at that time (the fault involved, rupture length, magnitude). Meanwhile, observed coseismic offsets will be estimated from continuous GPS data as soon as possible. This map shows a displacement field calculated from the final slip distribution of the ShakeOut scenario rupture using code that calculates displacements at GPS sites due to slip on triangular subfaults in an elastic half space. Displacement fields like this show where deformation is concentrated and will be used to prioritize download and processing of continuous GPS data and to identify important locations for additional data collection using campaign GPS.
