USGS Multi-Hazards Demonstration Project

NEWS for July 2009

,

ShakeOut Poster USGS Multi-Hazards Demonstration Project Chief Scientist, Dr. Lucy Jones, will present next Wednesday, July 29, at a public briefing of The
Congressional Hazards Caucus Alliance at the Capitol Visitors Center from
2:30 to 3:30 PM. The briefing, Disaster Preparedness: Lessons from the
Great Southern California ShakeOut, is sponsored by the Geological Society
of America, American Geophysical Union, Incorporated Research Institutions
for Seismology, and Seismological Society of America in cooperation with
the Congressional Hazards Caucus: Senators Mary Landrieu, Lisa Murkowski,
and Ben Nelson, and Representatives Dennis Moore, Jo Bonner, and Zoe
Lofgren, Co-Chairs of the Caucus. Presenting with Dr. Jones will be Stephen
Sellers, Assistant Secretary for Prevention, Operations and Recovery,
California Emergency Management Agency (CalEMA) and Gary Sturdivan,
Emergency Manager, East Valley Water District, San Bernardino, California.
Both Sellers and Sturdivan will discuss their participation in the ShakeOut
Earthquake Scenario and the Great Southern California ShakeOut and changes
that will strengthened infrastructure and improve emergency response. Over
5 million people participated in the Great Southern California ShakeOut,
the largest disaster preparedness drill in U.S. history. This effort led
to the creation of a statewide ShakeOut exercise planned for October 15,
2009 that is expected to be an annual event. The USGS Multi-Hazards
Demonstration Project is now creating a statewide catastrophic scenario,
called ARkStorm, taking the lessons of ShakeOut to a new set of hazards.
