The USGS Multi-Hazards Demonstration Project working diligently to complete a scenario about what will happen to Los Angeles and area communities if a magnitude-7.8 earthquake strikes the southern San Andreas Fault. The scenario will define how the area will respond to such heavy shaking – what infrastructures will be devastated, where emergency responders should concentrate their efforts and the potential economic impact of such an event. The scenario will be the centerpiece of “Golden Guardian” California’s largest emergency drill ever being planned for mid-November 2008. This professional drill will run concurrent with “The Great Southern California ShakeOut” when millions in public schools, businesses and the general public will take part in disaster drills, emergency response exercises, conferences, and public spectacles designed to raise awareness of earthquake response. Stay tuned….
