On Sept. 5, the largest emergency response exercise in California history officially began with a planning conference held in Ontario, California where USGS scientist Lucy Jones, Chief Scientist of the USGS Multi-Hazards Demonstration Project (MHDP), briefed over 150 regional and state emergency managers about Project’s earthquake scenario that will be the key factor driving a state-wide emergency response exercise dubbed “Golden Guardian 08.” This disaster planning exercise, being jointly organized by the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and the California Office of Homeland Security, will be based on what residents will most likely experience during a highly probable magnitude 7.8 earthquake on the southern section of the San Andreas Fault. The earthquake scenario, being prepared by MHDP scientists, will detail the geophysics, physical impacts, emergency response, health, social, and expected economic consequences from a large earthquake in this highly populated region. USGS scientists are also taking a leading role in the planning and implementation of the exercise. See: http://urbanearth.usgs.gov/.
